The second boat needs perhaps 40% more fuel and water capacity for the same guest count, and that tankage has to be designed into the hull rather than bolted in later.

Designing the dive operation

The dive deck decides whether a liveaboard is pleasant or exhausting to work. Three principles hold across almost every successful build here:

  • One-way diver flow. Guests should move from cabin to kit-up to boarding to rinse to camera table without crossing crew paths or their own returning traffic.
  • Compressors away from cabins. Compressor and generator noise is the single most common complaint on poorly planned vessels. Segregate the space, mount on isolators, duct the intake properly.
  • Camera space is not optional. Raja Ampat draws underwater photographers. A dedicated camera table with individual charging outlets, freshwater rinse separate from the general rinse tank, and secure stowage for housings is now an expectation, not a luxury.

A vessel that cannot complete a 12-day loop without an unplanned refuelling stop will lose charter days every season. We size tankage from a modelled itinerary rather than from a rule of thumb, and we oversize the reserve because weather here rewrites routes.

Hotel load is the quiet budget killer. Air conditioning for twelve cabins, a watermaker, compressors, refrigeration and camera charging add up to a generator plant that runs almost continuously unless it is planned properly. Schedule and budget
