Why wood still wins for large liveaboards

It is tempting to treat wooden construction as nostalgia. It is not. The decisive argument is failure recovery: when a wooden hull is damaged in Misool, there are craftsmen within reach who can cut out and replace a plank using materials and skills that already exist in the region. An aluminium hull with a cracked weld in the same place is waiting for a certified welder to fly in, and the vessel is out of service in the meantime.

Traditional construction also delivers something buyers of Indonesian expedition vessels genuinely value — the visual and structural character of a hand-built hull — which supports resale in a way that a one-off aluminium vessel does not. The trade is maintenance discipline. Wood punishes neglect. Ventilation, drainage, coating schedules and a proper annual inspection routine are non-negotiable, and owners who cannot commit to that should build in something else.

Where aluminium is the correct engineering answer

Aluminium earns its place where weight and speed are the operating requirement: fast crew transfer boats holding a schedule between Sorong and the islands, patrol and ranger craft, and light dive boats that need to reach distant sites quickly. Strength-to-weight is unmatched, it tolerates grounding better than most people expect, and maintenance is minimal.

Two cautions. First, repair support: build the relationship with a competent welding contractor before you need one, and carry a realistic spares and repair-materials package. Second, thermal and acoustic comfort: an uninsulated aluminium boat in equatorial sun is genuinely unpleasant, so the insulation and lining budget must be counted as part of the material decision, not treated as an extra.

Fiberglass and composite

GRP is the sensible default below about 20 m, particularly where an operator wants more than one identical boat. Once a mould exists, the second and third hulls cost considerably less and quality is repeatable. Maintenance is low, finish is good, and laminating repairs can be taught to a local crew with shippable materials.

The economics only work if the tooling cost is spread. For a genuine one-off, moulding a new hull is rarely the lowest-cost route, and either timber composite or an existing production platform will usually make more sense. Steel, briefly

Steel is worth considering above roughly 35 m, for higher passenger counts and for owners who want the most straightforward path through class and insurance. It is heavy and demands coating discipline in a hot, salty, humid environment, and the yards genuinely capable of it sit further west.
