Build simple, on purpose
The strongest advice we give island-based owners is to resist specification creep. Every added system is another thing that can fail three hours from the nearest workshop. A boat with two well-chosen outboards, straightforward electrics, a manual bilge backup and no unnecessary electronics will out-earn a more sophisticated vessel that spends a fortnight each season waiting for a part.
Concretely, that means: standardise on an outboard brand that already has dealer support and a parts pool in the region; keep fuel systems accessible with visible filters and drain points; avoid proprietary control systems that cannot be diagnosed locally; and use marine plywood or GRP construction that a local carpenter can patch. Layouts that work for snorkel and dive days
Deck layout decides how many trips a boat can turn in a day. For snorkel operations, the priorities are a wide boarding platform, a ladder guests can use in a swell without assistance, dry bag stowage that is genuinely dry, and shade that covers seated guests at midday rather than only at anchor. For dive operations, add tank racks positioned so cylinders are handled once, a rinse tank away from the boarding route, and a flat, stable area for camera gear.

A new boat is often the largest single investment a Raja Ampat homestay business makes, and the economics only work if the vessel is sized to actual demand rather than to ambition.
