Speedboats and tenders are the vessels that hold a Raja Ampat operation together. They move guests from Sorong to Waisai, run resort transfers, chase drift dives and fetch what the supply boat forgot. They also take more abuse than any other craft in the fleet. Design the boat around the run, not the top speed
Owners ask for knots. What they actually need is a reliable arrival time in the conditions they will genuinely face. A hull that touches 35 knots in flat water but has to slow to 12 in a beam chop is slower, in practice, than a heavier boat that holds 22 all the way across. Specify the crossing you must complete on schedule — Sorong to Waisai, resort to airport, dive centre to Cape Kri — and design backwards from it.
That approach usually produces a deeper-vee forward section than owners expect, more displacement than a pure planing racer, and engines chosen for cruise efficiency rather than peak output. It also produces a boat that is far less tiring to ride, which matters when the same crew makes the run twice a day for eight months.

Engine packages that survive the season
Outboards dominate this class in eastern Indonesia for one decisive reason: parts and technicians. Whatever brand already has dealer support and a live parts pool in the region is usually the correct engineering answer, even if a rival unit looks better on paper. Twin installations are worth the extra cost on any boat that carries paying guests across open water — a single engine failure halfway to Waisai is a rescue, not an inconvenience.

Guest comfort on a transfer boat
A transfer boat is often the first and last impression a resort guest has, and it is where operators most consistently under-invest. Four details do most of the work:
- Seating that absorbs impact. Shock-mitigating seats or well-designed suspension benches turn a punishing crossing into an acceptable one.
- Shade that covers people, not the deck. A canopy has to shade seated passengers at the sun angles you actually run in, including early morning and late afternoon.
- Dry luggage stowage. Guests arriving with soaked bags is an avoidable, memorable failure. Sealed lockers, not a tarpaulin.
- Boarding that works at a beach and at a jetty. Most Raja Ampat boats have to do both, and the boarding arrangement is what gets modified first if it was not thought through.
Tenders for liveaboards and resorts
Liveaboard tenders have a different brief again: they must launch and recover cleanly from a moving mother ship, carry divers plus cylinders, and stay manoeuvrable enough to pick up drifting divers in current. Weight is the governing constraint because it determines the davit and crane specification on the parent vessel, so tender selection has to happen early in a liveaboard design rather than at the end.
